Computer scientists unveil novel attacks on cybersecurity

Researchers have discovered two types of cyber attacks targeting the conditional branch predictor in Intel processors, revealing more information with greater precision than previous attacks. This feature tracks the sequence and addresses of ‘branches’ in software. The research, led by UC San Diego, resulted in Intel and AMD issuing security alerts. The researchers demonstrated the ability to capture branch outcomes in order, and also conducted a highly precise poisoning attack, which can lead to the execution of unintended code.
