What exactly is a data breach and why should I care

Data breaches occur when unauthorised individuals gain access to confidential information, sometimes by exploiting system flaws or weaknesses in a company’s infrastructure. The stolen data can be sold on the dark web or used for malicious purposes, such as identity theft or financial fraud. Individuals can protect themselves by changing passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and monitoring accounts for suspicious activity. Companies, like AT&T and Advance Auto Parts, that have suffered data breaches, can face significant fines and lawsuits.
