The State of Digital Privacy and Security in Michigan

Michigan has proposed the Personal Data Privacy Act, which would introduce strict laws around data privacy and sharing. It is yet to be passed, making online security a concern for residents. The Internet Privacy Protection Act and the Identity Theft Protection Act are the main laws in place. However, Michigan ranks high for digital breaches, and it lacks laws preventing surveillance or restricting platforms from collecting data. Losses due to cybercrime in the state rose to $177m in 2022, while its major healthcare facilities experienced multiple breaches.
