Hackers Weaponize SEC Disclosure Rules Against Corporate Targets

The ransomware group ALPHV (also known as BlackCat) has reported digital lending service provider MeridianLink to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for failing to disclose a cybersecurity breach in line with new regulations. The group claimed it attacked and stole data from MeridianLink, alleging that the company ignored new rules requiring companies to disclose breaches swiftly. The incident highlights the important role federal legal liabilities now play in disclosure decisions, according to Patrick Tiquet of Keeper Security.
