Australian Privacy Regulator Sues in Data Breach Case

The Australian Information Commissioner has filed a lawsuit against Australian Clinical Labs Limited over the company’s response to a data breach that occurred in February 2022. The case is significant because it’s only the second time the Australian regulator has initiated such proceedings since obtaining the power to do so in 2014. The case implies the regulator’s intent to ensure companies respond swiftly to cyber breaches. The maximum penalty for this case could be AUD 2.2 million.
