Telegram is testing a new feature giving free membership in return for letting the app use users’ phone numbers to relay one-time passwords (OTPs) to others logging in. Known as Peer-to-Peer Login, the feature is limited to 150 OTPs per month. Though Telegram assures protection from unwanted actions by recipients, it doesn’t prevent users contacting those to whom they send OTPs. Telegram has said it will ban users found sharing recipients’ personal data and advises against interacting with OTP recipients. Tech privacy and security remain a concern with phone number-based authentication services.
