India has introduced a Digital Personal Data Protection Act, applicable to any persons or entities processing personal data within India or for Indians abroad. Entities dealing with significant amounts of data (Significant Data Fiduciaries) need a data protection officer and independent auditor in India. Exemptions are given to entities involved in specific activities, such as judicial functions or crime prevention. Companies globally need to familiarize themselves with the Act and its requirements, despite an official effective date not being announced yet.
