Scammers in Hong Kong have defrauded victims out of HK$1.36m since September, using the false pretext of selling dog meat to trick them into downloading apps that harvest bank login details. The Hong Kong Homeless Dog Shelter, whose identity was also stolen as part of the scam, condemned the act, suggesting it involved a transnational syndicate.
