The hard facts about Australia’s antimicrobial use

Antimicrobial use in Australia decreased by 18% since 2020, however, the country still has one of the highest rates of this use globally. The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care’s AURA 2023 report indicates that one in three Australians had at least one antibiotic dispensed during the reporting period. The report also highlighted increasing drug resistance in pathogens such as S. aureus, E. coli, and N. gonorrhoeae.
