Why New Zealand is easing system ICT expansion

New Zealand’s Te Whatu Ora is seeking to limit the number of ICT systems in healthcare and enhance data and technology capabilities. Addressing a “patchwork” of over 4,000 varied quality systems, the agency plans to move to fewer, more robust platforms and bring systems to the cloud for cost-effective resilience. It also aims to standardise and automate national data collection to reduce cyber risks and unify health information. This aligns with the interim Te Pae Tata New Zealand Health Plan 2022’s focus on digital tool uptake.
