Cyber attacks, particularly ransomware, continue to pose a serious threat to healthcare providers, with 386 reported attacks in 2024, matching record highs from 2023. This is partly due to Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) models, allowing less skilled actors to launch significant attacks. Healthcare organizations are particularly impacted, as third-party provider attacks can also disrupt hospital operations. Despite ransomware groups’ stated guidelines, these are inconsistently applied, exacerbating the risks. Organizations need to be proactive in identifying early warning signs of an attack and follow the best security practices, and avoid paying ransoms due to potential consequences.
