The emergence of new respiratory viruses such as swine flu strain (H1N2), avian influenza H5N1 and evolving COVID-19 variants reveal the urgent need for broad-spectrum antivirals. Existing ones like adamantane and nirmatrelvir target specific strains only. To address this, researchers are using artificial intelligence to find similarities between viruses like SARS-CoV-2, influenza and RSV to develop drugs with broad antiviral activity. Wider antiviral treatment could also combat non-respiratory viruses like Ebola and Enterovirus D68.
