Private equity acquisitions of US healthcare firms have increased sixfold from 2012 to 2021, spurred by the inherent growth in demand for healthcare services, consolidation opportunities and the sector’s resilience during economic downturns. However, the Private Equity Stakeholder Project report highlights concerns about PE firms targeting intellectual and developmental disability services. These companies typically aim to double or triple their investment value within four to seven years, often leading to reduced care quality due to cost cuts, such as understaffing, underpayment, and neglect of infrastructure.
