What is the NSA and how does it work?

The National Security Agency (NSA) is a U.S. federal government surveillance and intelligence agency under the Department of Defense. It performs global electronic monitoring, collecting and processing information for intelligence-gathering purposes, but does not handle law enforcement or participate in military activities.
