What is DOS (disk operating system)?

A Disk Operating System (DOS) is an operating system that runs from a disk drive, most commonly referring to MS-DOS (Microsoft DOS) which was the main operating system for computers until 1995. A DOS provides a command-line interface allowing users to control the system and its components by typing commands. Despite limitations such as lack of built-in security and multitasking capabilities, DOS is still used for certain tasks and in some legacy systems.
