What Is a Certificate Revocation List (CRL) and How Is It Used?

A Certificate Revocation List (CRL) is a blocklist of digital certificates deemed untrustworthy and is critical to online security. Used to confirm the validity of a website’s certificate through various stages of checking and authentication, CRL protects from security risks by alerting users to invalid certificates. Drawbacks include difficulty of maintenance and the potential for security risks due to processing delays. Alternatives include the Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP), which, while less secure, is faster and more efficient.
