What If Psychedelics’ Hallucinations Are Just a Side Effect?

Scientists are developing a new generation of non-hallucinogenic psychedelics that could provide the mental health benefits of LSD, psilocybin and Ecstasy, without the associated “trip”. By avoiding the hallucinogenic effects, these drugs could dramatically increase the number of patients benefiting from psychedelics, and could offer further insights into how much psychedelics can alleviate psychological distress. Psilocybin and MDMA have proven effective at treating depression and PTSD, and therapies without hallucinogenic side effects could make these treatments more widely accessible and convenient.
