Cyberattacks on US systems are growing in number and sophistication, jeopardising the daily lives of millions and causing national security concerns. Challenges include a weak national cybersecurity strategy, limited federal systems security, vulnerable critical infrastructure, and compromised personal data. The US Government Accountability Office (GAO) has made around 567 recommendations to address these challenges, many of which remain unimplemented. Examples include the SolarWinds attack, the Log4j vulnerability, and the unauthorised access to sensitive taxpayer information by the IRS.
