‘Waiting List to Nowhere’: Homelessness Surveys Trap Black Men on the Streets

Vulnerability questionnaires used to determine US citizens’ suitability for free or subsidized housing are leading to racial disparities, favoring white people, according to local leaders and national homelessness experts. The scoring system awards more points for healthcare use and trust in the system, thereby disadvantaging Black people. Some cities are now revising their vulnerability assessment systems to reduce racial discrepancies and better assist Black people in securing housing.
