Virginia drug plant will be AstraZeneca’s largest

AstraZeneca is investing $50 billion in U.S. manufacturing and research by 2030, with a focus on producing drug substances for chronic disease treatments.

The main element of the investment is a proposed multibillion-dollar factory in Virginia, which will be the company’s largest single site globally, according to a July 21 news release from the drugmaker.

The plant will focus on producing small molecules, peptides and oligonucleotides for drugs targeting metabolic conditions, including weight management. In addition, the facility will aim to leverage AI and automation to optimize drug production.

AstraZeneca also plans to expand research and production facilities across Maryland, Massachusetts, California, Indiana and Texas and build new sites to support clinical trial supply.
