Veracode CTO and co-founder, Chris Wysopal, in a session at the Black Hat USA 2024 conference, urged developers to be cautious when using AI tools like Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT to generate code. While he acknowledged that large language models (LLMs) increased developers’ productivity, he emphasised the need for more efficient security testing of code produced by these tools. Studies found that AI-generated code was as vulnerable as human-produced code, with about 40% of it containing known vulnerabilities. Wysopal also warned of potential risks associated with poisoned data sets and an increase in AI-generated attacks.
