UW Health nurses are trialling generative AI to help answer patients’ queries sent via the health system’s portal. Microsoft and Epic launched the AI pilot program in 2023 to address healthcare demand and workforce shortages. The AI’s drafted responses are reviewed and edited by nurses. The system has been tested by over 75 nurses creating over 3,000 patient messages across 30 departments.
