Using psychology to defend against phishing attacks

Phishing remains a top cyberthreat, with nearly 300,000 complaints received by the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center in 2023. David Fine of the FBI emphasized during a HIMSS Healthcare Cybersecurity Forum session that social engineering relies on human nature for success and that people hold the key to preventing such attacks. Fine suggested developing a defense strategy rooted in understanding human biases, focusing on workforce training and promoting a culture of judicious skepticism.
