US Takes Down DanaBot Malware, Indicts Developers

The Russian cybercrime gang leader behind DanaBot, a malware used for stealing data and spying, inadvertently infected his own computer, aiding an FBI investigation. US federal prosecutors unsealed indictments against 16 defendants including the DanaBot leader and disabled the malware’s infrastructure. DanaBot infected over 300,000 computers worldwide, causing at least $50 million in damage. It also launched a distributed denial-of-service attack against Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense webmail server in 2022.
