Urgent need to improve public awareness of NHS patient data use

A ‘supplier defect’ led to 150,000 patient objections to sharing confidential health data not being sent to NHS Digital, leaving patients with a ‘sense of mistrust’, according to a statement by health minister Jackie Doyle-Price. A Healthwatch survey found that people are less aware of positive healthcare initiatives, highlighting the need for better engagement and transparency in storing and using patient data. The Wellcome Trust’s Understanding Patient Data programme aims to address this through fostering conversation.
