UnitedHealth Paid Ransom to Protect Patient Data

UnitedHealth Group confirmed that it paid a ransom demanded by hackers who attacked its Change Healthcare insurer unit in February 2024. In a quarterly SEC filing, the firm revealed the cyberattack cost it $872 million in Q1 2024 and could cost up to $1.6 billion in total. CEO Andrew Witty has pledged to do what is necessary to protect patient data and called for transparency in its processes. To-date, files of personal data that were stolen in the attack have been located, but no evidence of leaked medical histories found. The company continues to restore its systems following the attack, and is offering free credit monitoring and identity theft protections for two years to those affected.
