UnitedHealth paid ransom to bad actors, says patient data compromised

UnitedHealth has reported a cyber attack that allowed the perpetrators to access files containing protected health information and personally identifiable information of potentially millions of Americans. The company processes over 15 billion transactions annually, meaning non-customers could also be affected. No full medical data has been published online and free identity theft protection will be offered for two years. The breach’s scale remains under review.
