Ukraine Targeted in Cyberattack Exploiting 7-Year-Old Microsoft Office Flaw

Cybersecurity researchers have uncovered an operation targeting Ukraine, leveraging a seven-year-old flaw in Microsoft Office to infiltrate systems with malware. The attack, reported by Deep Instinct, engaged a PowerPoint file as the initial point of incursion with the probability of distribution via the Signal messaging app. The attack employs a now-patched remote code execution bug in Office, and mimics the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client. The exact source and end goal of the intrusion are unclear.
