The U.S. Department of Justice announced punitive action against 16 individuals accused of developing and using DanaBot malware, controlled by a Russian cybercrime organisation. The software infected 300,000 computers, causing $50 million in damages. The malware also revealed the identities of some of the perpetrators, who accidentally infected their own systems. The operation also dismantled DanaBot’s command-and-control servers. Among the defendants, Aleksandr Stepanov and Artem Aleksandrovich Kalinkin are at large and could face significant prison sentences if convicted.
