Computed tomography (CT) scans in Los Angeles are being marketed as essential health check-ups, but the US$500-1,000 price tag and radiation exposure raise serious doubts about their necessity and safety. The American College of Preventive Medicine says such scans “aren’t very good at finding cancer in people without symptoms.” Arl Van Moore from the American College of Radiology said that such scans are generally unwarranted for healthy individuals with no concerning symptoms. However, DEXA scans are recognized as accurate methods for checking body composition; they can cost around US$75 but are not typically covered by insurance.
