The Stigma of Chronic Migraine

Headache disorders, particularly migraines, are among the leading causes of disability worldwide yet they are often overlooked and not properly diagnosed or managed. Migraine stigma may be due to its invisible but debilitating symptoms, and the societal misunderstanding of its severe impact on sufferers’ lives. Psychological consequences include anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. Migraine sufferers need to openly communicate with their doctors, loved ones, and colleagues for better understanding and support. Additionally, joining migraine support groups can also be beneficial.
