The aging and retiring physician workforce in the US could exacerbate the country’s looming physician shortage. The Association of American Medical Colleges reports a large proportion of active physicians are near retirement age. Two health systems, Sentara Health and Baptist Health, are working to overcome this by offering flexible roles for retired physicians and increasing recruitment. Baptist Health also launched a program encouraging early retirement notice, offering payouts of up to $70,000 for two years’ notice.
