The nine holiday scams catching out even the savviest travellers

Scammers may use email or social media to offer low-priced flights, hotels, or trips to lure potential victims. Customers are advised to conduct thorough research, including checking if the agent or company is a member of the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) or holds an Air Travel Operators’ Licence (ATOL), and verifying any claims on the relevant bodies’ websites. Credit card payments are more advisable than wire payments or bank transfers because, under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974, credit card providers are obliged to refund amounts between £100 and £30,000 in cases of fraud.
