Medibank, the second Australian company to experience a large-scale data breach in less than a month, discovered suspicious activity on its network on 12th October. Medibank made it public and investigated but initially found no evidence of customer data compromise. Hackers contacted Medibank on 19th October and provided a sample of stolen customer records. The breach impacted a total of 9.7 million customers, threatening to publish the stolen data unless a US$10 million ransom was paid.
