The dangers of public Wi-Fi: How to protect yourself

Public Wi-Fi networks pose significant security risks, including lack of encryption, middle-man attacks, rogue hotspots, packet sniffing, malware distribution, and session hijacking. Users are advised to avoid accessing sensitive information, use VPNs, verify networks before connecting, and enable two-factor authentication, among other protective measures. Recognising signs of a compromised device, such as unfamiliar pop-ups or unusual account activity, is also essential. Despite convenience, public Wi-Fi should be used with heightened vigilance.
