Tens of thousands of taxpayer accounts hacked as CRA repeatedly paid out millions in bogus refunds

Confidential data was accessed by hackers from one of Canada’s largest tax preparation firms, H & R Block Canada, allowing them to infiltrate hundreds of individuals’ Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) accounts, unnecessarily redirecting over $6 million in refunds. The sources of the hacking remain unidentified and the public was never informed by Revenue Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau or CRA’s media relations office about the data breach. H & R Block denies its own systems were compromised, and the CRA stated it has measures in place to counteract such threats.
