Telehealth and Virtual Reality Expand into Mainstream Care at the VA

Dr. Joseph Kvedar, the immediate past chair of the American Telemedicine Association, stated that the COVID-19 pandemic provided valuable insights about the effective use of telehealth. He added that by employing technologies like virtual and augmented reality, behavioral health, and conditions like phobias can be better addressed. Early results from a pilot with veterans using VR headsets for physical therapy showed positive outcomes, indicating the scope for more telehealth technologies beyond video. The NIH Clinical Center also integrated telehealth platforms with commercially available solutions.
