A Chinese foreign exchange student was discovered safe in Utah after a suspected “cyber-kidnapping”. The parents received a ransom photo of Kai Zhuang, 17, and paid $80,000. Authorities traced Zhuang to a tent 30 miles north of Brigham City through purchase history and mobile geolocation. In these cases, fraudsters contact the student and parents separately, demanding ransom and instructing the student to isolate in a remote area.
