More than 60% of physicians and 51% of pharmacists reportedly experience burnout, contributing to primary care provider shortages. High numbers of retail pharmacies in areas with these shortages could represent an opportunity for pharmacists to help fill gaps in healthcare. However, policy and payment structures must change to combat the causes of burnout, acknowledging the value of the role pharmacists play in administering treatments like vaccinations. Secondly, technology should be used to support clinicians and streamline operations, despite it currently being a major contributor to burnout.
