Syphilis Is a Public Health Priority

Syphilis rates in the US are at their highest since the 1950s. The sexually transmitted infection, if untreated, can lead to serious complications including heart damage and infant death. Over 90% of cases of congenital syphilis could have been prevented with timely testing and treatment during pregnancy, according to a recent report. The US Department of Health and Human Services has formed a task force to improve prevention, treatment, and reduce health inequities.
