Successive HIPAA Breaches Lead To $1.3 Million Settlement For Nation’s Largest Public Health Plan – Healthcare

The Local Initiative Health Authority for Los Angeles County (LA Care) reached a $1.3 million settlement after allegations of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) violations. The allegations stemmed from two incidents in January 2014 and 2019, where protected health information (PHI) was potentially exposed due to manual processing and mailing errors. Part of the settlement requires LA Care to enact a corrective action plan (CAP) to remedy its alleged noncompliance.
