Students and teachers fight back cyber attack on University Network

On January 9, 2024, the University of California, Irvine’s Discord servers suffered a cyber attack that shared disturbing visual content to its 3,000 users. Students and staff orchestrated a cohesive response, banning guilty accounts and successfully countering the attack. The hackers also demanded a $1,000 ransom, indicating smaller threat actors driven by financial motives rather than state-funded groups.
