Sri Lanka’s government cloud, Lanka Government Cloud (LGC), suffered a severe ransomware attack beginning August 26, 2023, impacting all LGC services and compromising 5,000 “gov[dot]lk” email addresses. While the system was restored within 12 hours, an absence of back-up data from May to August resulted in irrevocable data loss. The attack highlighted security deficiencies within the LGC, including outdated email software, prompting Sri Lanka to invest in stronger cybersecurity measures.
