Sleep deprivation in early life increases autism risk

Sleep deprivation during early life could lead to long-term negative impacts on brain development and increase the risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), according to a study led by Sean Gay in Graham Diering’s lab at the UNC School of Medicine. The research found that lack of sleep could disrupt neural synapse formation in infants, a process crucial for learning and memory. The team aims to develop sleep-based medicine to restore sleep function in children.
