SH2B1 gene defends against obesity via the paraventricular hypothalamus

A team led by Liangyou Rui at the University of Michigan has found that the SH2B1 gene plays a key role in regulating food intake and weight, with mutations causing obesity and metabolic disorders. The team identified that the gene operates within an area of the brain associated with blood pressure regulation and fluid balance. They discovered when this gene-carrying circuit was stimulated, it suppressed the appetite in mice, and when silenced, it led to obesity. The findings suggest enhancing SH2B1 activity could treat obesity and related diseases.
