Senate Probes the Cost of Assisted Living and Its Burden on American Families

A US Senate committee is examining assisted living for the first time in 20 years amid concerns about high costs and varying quality of care. However, politicians don’t seem eager for Congress to play a larger role in regulation. The inquiry aims to provide consumers with greater knowledge of the financial practices and care standards of facilities. There are over 800,000 senior Americans living in assisted facilities; most costs are out of pocket as only a fifth of facilities accept Medicaid.
