Senate panel OKs Makary's nomination as FDA commissioner

The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee has advanced Marty Makary’s nomination as Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Makary, a surgeon and public policy researcher at Johns Hopkins University, is a supporter of the Trump administration’s health agenda and a critic of COVID-19 lockdowns. Despite some initial resistance from Republican senators over Makary’s choice of top FDA counsel, he was still voted through 14-9.
