Apple continuously adds malware detection rules to macOS’s built-in XProtect suite. XProtect uses Yara signature-based detection to identify malware, which any organisation or individual can create and use. Recently Apple upgraded from the Malware Removal Tool to XProtectRemediator (XPR), a more capable native anti-malware component. Mac’s XProtect can detect and remove malware on its own but users are advised to use third-party malware detection and removal tools as well.
