Russia’s GRU military intelligence agency, known as Sandworm, carried out a third major cyberattack on Ukraine’s power grid in October 2021. The cyberattack coordinated with a series of missile strikes on the same city, causing a power outage for citizens and erasing computer data two days later. Cybersecurity firm Mandiant stated the attackers had full control of the power utility’s software two weeks before the attack, pointing to a possible deliberate coordination of physical and digital assaults.
