Russian hackers are being implicated in a ransomware attack on major London hospitals. The cyber-attack targeted pathology services firm Synnovis, disrupting healthcare operations including blood transfusions, clinical tests and surgeries. The former head of the National Cyber Security Centre, Ciaran Martin, mentioned the involvement of a Russian criminal group called Qilin, which allegedly operates ‘freely’ within Russia. The motive of the attack is pegged as financial gain although official policy is not to pay ransoms. The priority now is the restoration of services.
